You may have heard the expression “perfect is the enemy of good.” Perfection is a Western cultural value that many of us aspire to in our work, our play – we want to do well. We have been taught to work hard and be as good as we possibly can be, as close to perfect as our efforts allow. But at best, the aphorism inclines us to be ok with not-quite-perfect, to accept that “good” can be enough. What if we oriented ourselves differently, to understand that imperfection is its own reward, its own amazing beauty?
